HouseTalk – Mother’s Day & Curb Appeal
Tomorrow is Mother’s Day and it is one of my favorite times of the year! Not only is it a great day to pay tribute to our Mothers – but it is a sign that spring is here to stay. Living in the Chicago area – we have long winters and Mother’s Day is a time when we can be assured if we plant flowers they are not going to “freeze”. If you are selecting a Mother’s Day gift today – the most popular choice is flowers. And if Mom has a green thumb or enjoys spending time outdoors – the floral gift is usually one that is potted or can be planted rather than fresh flowers.
There is something about being able to see those flowers bloom daily as spring turns into summer. It is a gift for Mom that continues every day. Mom is not the only one that gets to enjoy the floral gifts. I love driving down the street and looking at the flowers as they change the landscape of each home. Flowers add to your home’s curb appeal and make people pause as they walk by and admire the blooms. Of course, everyones choices are different — I love seeing the variety of colors and flowers that are chosen.
When I am purchasing my flowers each year, I think back to my Mom’s favorites and always try to include them in my selections. Her favorites differed depending on where they were planted. Geraniums always were in pots by the front door. The petunias were usually planted in the flower beds. Hens and chicks are also a family favorite and one that Mom always treasured.
Whether you are buying flowers for Mom or yourself – keep in mind it is one the most beautiful and long lasting gifts you can give to Mom, yourself, your neighbors and those that drive or walk by your home. Great “Curb Appeal” is a gift that increases the appeal of your home!
“Happy Mother’s Day!”
